When Obedience Isn’t Glamorous

Some of the most faithful moments in our walk with God will never get a “like,” a photo, or a round of applause. They happen in the quiet, the still, the ordinary.

For me, one of those moments happened on a Tuesday afternoon. I had a list of things I wanted to do, but instead, I felt prompted to check in one someone who had been battling a health condition. No sermon to prepare, no ministry event to promote, just a quiet sense that I needed to be present. No one else knew. The conversation didn’t “go viral” — it wasn’t that kind of moment. But I finished knowing that God had been present between updates and opinions about some shared hobbies.

Why We Crave Glamour

If we’re honest, most of us want our obedience and follow through to be noticed. We want to serve and see results. We like the story of Noah because he gets a rainbow at the end. We like the story of David because he gets a crown. But the truth is, obedience often looks like ordinary faithfulness to that which brings a very normal day to day.

Jesus said it this way:

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…” (Luke 16:10)

We don’t like the “very little” part. But the very little is where God trains us for the much. If we despise the little, we will buckle under the weight of the "much". It is almost God knows how each measure of faithfulness we can bear and it's desired outcome. Yet, it is easier to be faithful with less than more.

The Power of Hidden Faithfulness

There’s something powerful about choosing to obey when no one is watching. Those hidden “yeses” form the kind of faith that can stand in the light. If our faith only functions when it’s seen, we might be more interested in approval than obedience.

Faithfulness is a matter of obedience, not a matter of outcome.

Your Quiet Yes Matters

Think about Joseph — not the Old Testament dreamer, but the New Testament carpenter. He obeyed God in ways that were mostly behind the scenes: protecting Mary, raising Jesus, fleeing to Egypt when told. No big crowds, no platform. Just faithful obedience that shaped the world. each day was met with the needs of his family, his community, and directed by his faitfulness to God who had given him much more than he could fully grasp. Yet, he said "yes' to it all.

You may never know this side of heaven what your quiet “yes” has set in motion. But obedience is never wasted in God's work in your life.

Reflection Question:

Where is God calling you to say “yes” when no one else will notice?

Keep Looking Up,
